Jair Jurrjens of the Atlanta Braves Named Winner of the National League Rookie of the Month Award Presented by Gillette for June

Atlanta Braves pitcher Jair Jurrjens has been named the June recipient of the National League Rookie of the Month Award presented by Gillette.

In four starts last month, Jurrjens posted a 3-0 record and a 1.63 ERA. Atlanta won all four of the games started by the Curacao native. The 22-year-old did not surrender an earned run in his final three starts in June, spanning 21.2 innings in which he yielded just 14 hits. Overall, the right-hander fanned 18 batters in 27.2 innings, allowing 25 hits, seven walks and just one home run. In 18 starts this year, Jurrjens is 9-4 with a 3.00 ERA, and he has a 12-5 record and a 3.37 ERA in his first 25 Major League starts, which included seven starts with the Detroit Tigers last season. The Braves acquired Jurrjens as part of last October's trade that sent shortstop Edgar Renteria to the Tigers.

Others rookies receiving votes included St. Louis Cardinals right-handed pitcher Mitchell Boggs (3-0, 4.37 ERA, 22.2 IP, 10 SO); San Francisco Giants first baseman John Bowker (.325, 4 HR, 19 RBI, 14 R, .584 SLG); and San Diego Padres second baseman Edgar Gonzalez (.330, 33 H, 9 2B, 3 HR, 11 RBI, 11 R).

As part of Gillette's involvement, fans, for the first time, have a voice in selecting the Rookie of the Month winners by voting online each month at MLB.com/gillette. The online fan vote represents 20% of the overall vote with the remaining votes coming from team baseball writers and Club broadcasters.

Gillette, the presenting sponsor of the National League Rookie of the Month Award will donate $5,000 in the name of Jair Jurrjens to the Club's official charity.

Voting for July's recipient of the National League Rookie of the Month Award presented by Gillette will begin on Tuesday, August 5th at MLB.com/gillette. MLB fans who cast their vote will automatically be entered for a chance to win a trip to a game of the 2008 World Series.
