Clayton State to Hold “Laker Madness” on October 14

“Laker Madness,” the introduction of the 2010/2011 Clayton State University Laker basketball teams, will be held at the University’s Athletics & Fitness Center on Thursday, Oct. 14, starting at 10 p.m.

The event is free and open to the general public and will feature highlights from last season as people are entering the gym.

The program will start with student three-point and dunk contests, followed by a routine by the Clayton State cheerleaders.

Next, the Clayton State women’s team will be introduced, followed by a 15 minute scrimmage. Coach Dennis Cox will then speak to the crowd about what is coming up for the 2010/2011 season.

The team introductions, scrimmage and a talk by men's coach Gordon Gibbons will follow the women's session.

The entire program should take about 90 minutes.

A unit of the University System of Georgia, Clayton State University is an outstanding comprehensive metropolitan university located 15 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.

NFL Players Association Announces Partnership with RisingSeniors.com

NFLPA tailors Training Camp for Life, a character and skills development program for the Inaugural Georgia Junior Bowl Game

The top junior high school football players in Georgia will get treated like the NFL’s best when they attend the first RisingSeniors.com event in Atlanta, January 4 to8, 2011. The unique five-day summit has an unprecedented format which concentrates on the overall education and development of these young athletes rather than just the game. The culminating contest known as The Georgia Junior Bowl will feature the best juniors in the state at Bobby Dodd Stadium on the campus of Georgia Tech. The game is but a fraction of the programming compared to the rest of the action packed week of events slated for the young student athletes. In compliance with the NCAA, the programs will be run just like the NFL’s Rookie Symposium to focus on key issues that deal with character and life skills development. The program was designed to assist the young men with the challenges which lie ahead as they will attend workshops on NCAA compliance, ACT and SAT test prep, drug-free sports, social media training, alternate careers in sports and choices and consequences. There will also be a special session on giving back to the community presented by Danny Wurfel, former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Legend.

“It is imperative we educate these student-athletes on the life skills required to be prepared for the college transition and life after football,” said Willis Whalen, NFLPA Manager of Player Services and Development and Training Camp for Life creator. “The Georgia Junior Bowl provides Training Camp for Life with the unique platform to reach a key audience. Peter Westbrook Foundation (PWF) Teams Unite for 2010 U.S. National Fencing Championships

Most notable of all, however, was the come-from-behind victory against defending champions Manhattan Fencing Center. Facing a team starting one Olympic medalist and one World Team member, the PWF was pitted as relative underdogs and was forced to fight back from an early deficit for the entirety of the match. In heroic fashion, displaying poise, composure and a will to win, Dan Bak would step up in the final bout to take the match by defeating Darryl Homer in a thrilling one touche finale, 45-44. The win would spur on victories in other events that had yet to compete. The PWF Senior Women's foil team would go on to claim the championship with landslide victories over their competitors. The Senior Men's Epee team and the Peter Westbrook Junior Sabre Team would go on to earn silver medals in their events as well.

'Be a Fan': Special Olympics Georgia State Summer Games May 21-23

/PRNewswire/ -- About 2,600 athletes and coaches from all over Georgia will compete in Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA) State Summer Games May 21-23 at Emory University. Athletes will compete in athletics, aquatics, soccer, soccer skills, badminton, volleyball, table tennis, tennis, and gymnastics.

The games, which are free and open to the public, begin Friday, May 21, with the Opening Ceremony at 8 p.m. at Emory's McDonough Field with a parade of athletes. NFL Donates More Than $2 Million for Red Cross Disaster Response in Haiti

/PRNewswire/ -- The National Football League (NFL) and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) are donating $500,000 to the American Red Cross to aid victims of the earthquake in Haiti. The NFL and its network partners will run pregame and in-game messages during the weekend's playoff games valued at $1.5 million to promote donations. In addition, NFL owners and players are making their own personal donations.

A national PSA will air during each playoff game this weekend promoting donations to the Red Cross via www.redcross.org. The PSA will feature New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma and San Diego Chargers defensive end Jacques Cesaire, two players with Haitian-born parents.

There will be in-stadium video board and PA messages, in all four stadiums hosting games this weekend, promoting the Red Cross text-to-give program. The Minnesota Vikings will have a collection drive at their stadium gates for this weekend's game and they will run an in-game PSA featuring running back Adrian Peterson.

"The generous contribution of the NFL and the NFLPA is critical to the ability of the American Red Cross to provide help and hope for the people of Haiti during their time of need," said Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the American Red Cross. "We are rushing supplies and disaster management staff to Haiti in the aftermath of this earthquake, and are very grateful the support of the NFL and the NFLPA for our humanitarian mission."

The American Red Cross is on the ground in Port-au-Prince, along with Red Cross teams from around the world. Among these Red Cross representatives are engineers, surgeons and family linking specialists. These teams will establish field hospitals, restore water and sanitation systems, distribute supplies and restore family links facilities. In addition, the Red Cross is performing triage, first aid, addressing urgent needs and mobilizing a massive response operation in Haiti. A base camp has been secured near the airport with warehousing facilities for relief supply staging.

The Red Cross continues to see an outpouring of support and concern from the public. People who want to help those affected by the Haitian earthquake can make a donation via RedCross.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.

The Red Cross is also receiving money through a third party mobile fundraising effort sponsored by Mobile Accord. Mobile donors can text "Haiti" to 90999 to send a ten dollar donation to the Red Cross. The funds will go to support the Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.

At this time, what the Red Cross needs most are financial contributions - whether by check, online or by phone. Things like clothes are not helpful right now because there is nowhere to store them, no one to sort them, and it would be difficult to transport the items to Haiti. One good way to turn clothes into cash is to have a garage sale and then donate the money to the relief efforts.

Governor Perdue Places Friendly Independence Bowl Wager with Governor Rick Perry

Governor Sonny Perdue placed a friendly wager with Texas Governor Rick Perry over the outcome of today’s Independence Bowl game between the University of Georgia Bulldogs and Texas A&M University Aggies.

“In 2007, Governor Perry graciously flew the Georgia flag at the Texas Capitol after the Warner Robins Little Leaguers defeated Texas for the U.S. championship in route to their World Series title,” said Governor Perdue. “Now in the Christmas Season Governor Perry is seeking to redeem himself with another wager. However, I am confident that Coach Richt and the Bulldogs will deliver for Georgia and the Atlanta Community Food Bank.”

In the spirit of friendly competition both Governors agreed to wager food supplies for a local food pantry. When Georgia defeats Texas A&M, Governor Perdue will donate the winnings to the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

Governor Perry however had a different take on the outcome of tonight’s game.

“Georgia has a tremendous football program, but they’re going to find out the hard way just why Texas is the center of the football universe,” Gov. Perry said. “As an Aggie myself, you might say I’m biased, but I’ve seen this team grow each week under Coach Sherman, and I know the Aggies will take home a victory and send the Bulldogs back home to Georgia.”

Special Olympics Georgia Receives $80,000 Grant From the UPS Foundation

Trout Unlimited's Gold Rush Chapter Schedules 1st Annual Fly Fishing Challenge at Frog Hollow

The Gold Rush Chapter of Trout Unlimited, based in Dahlonega, has announced that it will sponsor the first annual Gold Rush Cup Fly Fishing Challenge to be held on the beautiful and picturesque waters of the Chestatee River.

The venue, which has been carefully chosen, is one of the most popular trophy trout streams in the United States, Frog Hollow in Lumpkin County. This year's event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. (a rain date will be provided). Attendance is open to the public with fly casting and tying demonstrations being provided by Gold Rush Chapter members. Food and drink will be available for purchase. Event tickets are $5.00 per person; children 12 and under are free. A number of raffle items will also be available.

This is a fly fishing challenge which will permit two-person teams of contestants to match their skills against other teams to earn a $1,000 grand prize, plus two quality, custom-made fly rods. Individual awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Registration to compete is open to the general public, on a first come basis, and the deadline for entry is Thursday, Oct. 1. Participants must be members of the national organization of Trout Unlimited; membership is open to the general public (see www.tu.org). A maximum of 10 two-person teams will be permitted; however, a minimum of five two-person teams must be registered for the event to take place.

A $500, non-refundable registration and entry fee for each two-person team is required. Business or corporate gold level sponsorship of a team or for a business/corporate booth is $200, and silver level sponsorships are $50. In the event an insufficient number of participants register for this event, all funds for individuals and businesses will be returned.

A kick-off dinner will be hosted at the site of the tournament in Frog Hollow on the Friday night before the competition;. It will begin at 5 p.m.; and the cost is $10.00 per person. A participant captain's meeting will also be held at Frog Hollow on the evening prior to the tournament.

This is a two-person team event which will be conducted according to Gold Rush tournament committee rules and regulations. The mission of Trout Unlimited's Gold Rush Chapter, is to conserve, protect, and restore the coldwater fisheries and their watersheds in the North Georgia area, while assisting the T.U. national organization to do the same at the national level.

In addition to the monthly chapter meetings, the Gold Rush Chapter is actively involved in conservation efforts that include assistance to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Forestry Service to ensure and enhance the environment and to perpetuate fish species by constructing and maintaining various stream structures. The chapter also initiates and works with other organizations in stream cleanup, assists with stocking of streams, and monitors water quality conditions of local streams. The chapter has been engaged in teaching the sport of fly fishing and conservation practices at several locations including North Georgia College and State University, Brenau University, and Lumpkin County Middle and High Schools, Outdoor Activity Day at Unicoi, and Kids' Day at Amicalola Park. Thrashers to Host Girls’ & Women’s Hockey Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 24

Annual Event Surrounding Game against the San Jose Sharks at Philips Arena to Recognize Female Participation in Hockey in the Southeast

The Atlanta Thrashers, along with USA Hockey, are hosting Girls’ & Women’s Hockey Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 24, surrounding their game against the San Jose Sharks at Philips Arena at 7 p.m.

The annual showcase, which includes several events and activities throughout the day, is dedicated to recognizing female participation in hockey throughout the Southeast. This year’s event will feature two-time member of the United States women’s Olympic hockey team and Harvard graduate Julie Chu.

Chu will participate in several events, including an on-ice clinic for girls and women, along with members of the Thrashers Hockey Development Team, at Philips Arena from 1-3 p.m. She will also address participants in the showcase from 6-6:45 p.m. to discuss her experiences in the sport and will hold a meet-and-greet with members of the Women’s Sports Foundation’s Go Girl Go program.

Also planned for the event are special pre-game introductions of 12 local girls hockey players (ages 6-16), who will skate onto the ice along with their counterparts from the Thrashers and Sharks starting line-ups prior to the national anthem. Girls and women hockey players will also be featured on-ice during both intermissions in a scrimmage and shootout, respectively.

Golf Returns to the Olympic Games

(BUSINESS WIRE)--The sport of golf will be part of the programme when the Olympic Games come to Rio de Janeiro in 2016 thanks in part to the consulting support of Helios Partners. Last played in the St. Louis Games of 1904, the return of Olympic golf competition is expected to draw the world’s best men’s and women’s golfers to the competition.

Clayton State Cross Country/Track Car Wash Fundraiser Set for October 16

Clayton State University’s cross country and track & field teams will be conducting their seventh car wash fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 16 at Rocky’s Café & Pizza, located at 2262 Lake Harbin Rd., in Morrow. The car wash will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Team members are selling booklets for $10 each that contain coupons for five car washes on Oct. 16 and special meal deals at Rocky’s that are good until Oct. 31. Thrashers Agree to Terms with Unrestricted Free Agent Forward Maxim Afinogenov

The Atlanta Thrashers have agreed to terms on a contract with unrestricted free agent forward Maxim Afinogenov, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Afinogenov (ah-fihn-ah-GEHN-ahf), 30, recorded two points (one goal, one assist) in three pre-season games for the Thrashers after joining the team during training camp on a professional try-out agreement.

A veteran of nine NHL seasons, Afinogenov has recorded 334 points (134 goals, 200 assists) in 569 games with the Buffalo Sabres, including 32 power play goals and 20 game-winning goals. Last season, the 6-0, 190-pound right wing tallied 20 points (six goals, 14 assists) in 48 games with the Sabres. He has also appeared in 49 playoff games for Buffalo, recording 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists).

During his NHL career, Afinogenov has tallied 20-or-more goals on three occasions, including the 2006-07 season when he recorded a career-best 23, and has surpassed the 60-point mark twice, including a career-high 73 points (22 goals, 51 points) in 2005-06. In 2005-06, he also set career highs with 11 power play goals, 241 shots on goal and 84 penalty minutes.

A native of Moscow, Afinogenov has represented Russia in international competition on 11 occasions, including the 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympic Games. He has also represented his country in the World Cup of Hockey (2005), the World Championships (1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2008) and the World Junior Championships (1998 and 1999).

Afinogenov, who was originally selected by Buffalo in the third round, 69th overall, of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, spent three seasons with Dynamo Moscow in Russia prior to his NHL career.

Atlanta Thrashers to Host Annual Face-Off Event for Season Ticket Holders on Thursday, Oct. 1, at Philips Arena from 6-9 p.m.

The Atlanta Thrashers will host their annual Face-Off Event at Philips Arena on Thursday, Oct. 1, from 6-9 p.m. The event gives season ticket holders a first glance at the 2009-10 Atlanta Thrashers roster and a chance to meet and interact with all of their favorite players, coaches and management.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. with team introductions beginning at 6:45 p.m. Other activities scheduled include an autograph session with all members of the team, interactive games and an equipment sale.

Valdosta State University to Add Women's Soccer in 2011

Valdosta State will field women's soccer as an intercollegiate sport beginning in 2011, according to an announcement made by VSU President Patrick Schloss and Athletic Director Herb Reinhard during a press conference at the University Center Wednesday.

"I am pleased to announce the addition of women's soccer as the 12th intercollegiate and sixth women's sport at Valdosta State," said Schloss in making the announcement. "We will join the Gulf South Conference as one of nine schools to sponsor this sport. We feel that we are well positioned geographically to become a power in this sport and look forward to seeing this new team uphold the proud tradition that is Valdosta State Athletics."

Reinhard indicated that a national coaching search will begin within the next 3 weeks and that the University planned on having its newest coach in place during the later winter or early spring months of 2010.

"Our timeline includes getting a coach in here as quickly as possible," he said. "That will give whoever leads our new program basically all of 2010 and the first half of 2011 to get everything involved with starting a new program, including recruiting, scheduling and buying equipment, completed."

Both Schloss and Reinhard pointed to the support of the Valdosta State campus and Valdosta community as a major factor in choosing VSU's newest Division II program.

"I would like to say that we really appreciate the Student Government Association for their support and input as we have moved forward with adding another sport at Valdosta State," Schloss added. "Likewise, the support from our community, which has already stepped forward with offers of funding, has been unbelievable. The response from all parties has been positive and shows that they believe in this move and how it will benefit the University as a whole."

Reinhard also added that much of the infrastructure for the new program has already been put in place, making the decision to add women's soccer easier.

"We planned ahead when building the new Athletic Fieldhouse," he concluded. "The infrastructure, including locker rooms and coaches offices, was included with the new Fieldhouse. Additionally, we have the space behind that building to build a playing surface, along with two football practice fields."

Women's soccer will be the first sport Valdosta State has added since the school began women's volleyball in 1995. In addition to becoming the ninth GSC school to sponsor the sport, VSU will become the 21st NCAA institution to participate in the sport in the state of Georgia, including the seventh Division II program. One of the nation's fastest growing sports among females, girls soccer is currently sponsored by 310 high schools in the state of Georgia.

Clayton State Foundation to Host Annual Town and Gown Golf Tournament October 12

The Clayton State University Foundation’s Annual Town & Gown Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, Oct. 12 at Crystal Lake Country Club, 100 Crystal Lake Blvd., Hampton, Ga., with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 10 a.m.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Excellence Fund of the Clayton State University Foundation, which is primarily used to provide scholarships for students in the Clayton State Honors Program.

The entry costs are $500 per four-person team or $150 per individual, if received by Oct. 5. Team entries after Oct. 5 are $600 and individual entries are $200. Awards will include first and second team prizes, along with raffle prizes.

Sponsorships are also still available for the tournament. There are various levels of sponsorship, including; Event Sponsors ($5000), Co-Tournament Sponsors ($2500), Laker Sponsors ($1000), Luncheon Sponsors ($200) and Cart Sponsors ($150). Thrashers Trim Training Camp Roster by 10 Players

Nine Assigned to Chicago (AHL); One Released

The Atlanta Thrashers have assigned nine players to the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell. Additionally, one player was released from his try-out contract.

Forwards Angelo Esposito, Riley Holzapfel, Rylan Kaip, Andrew Kozek, Jordan LaVallee, Brett Sterling and Anthony Stewart, along with defenseman Chad Denny and goaltender Peter Mannino will report to Chicago. Forward Kevin Doell, who is under contract with the Wolves, has been released from Atlanta’s training camp.

The Thrashers opened their pre-season schedule in Nashville on Sept. 17 and Tampa Bay on Sept. 18, earning a 0-1-1 record. The team will host Carolina on Monday, Sept. 21 (7 p.m.), Nashville on Wednesday, Sept. 23 (7 p.m.) and Tampa Bay on Sunday Sept. 27 (5 p.m.) prior to the opening of the 2009-10 NHL Regular Season when the Lighthing visit at Philips Arena on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m.

Piedmont Mountainside Welcomes Rodney D. Fields, M.D., to its Medical Staff

Piedmont Mountainside Hospital (PMH) welcomes orthopaedic surgeon Rodney D. Fields, M.D., to its medical staff. On Monday, Sept. 14, Dr. Fields and Piedmont Healthcare opened Piedmont Sports and Orthopaedic Surgery in Ellijay.

“We are thrilled Dr. Fields has decided to join the Piedmont family,” said Mike Robertson, president and CEO of Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. “He has extensive experience and knowledge in his field. His expertise and outstanding reputation will be a great addition to the Piedmont Mountainside medical staff.”

Dr. Fields is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon practicing in Ellijay, Ga. He was born in Ohio and attended medical school at the University of Miami School of Medicine in Florida. He completed his internship and residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

After his residency, Dr. Fields completed a sports medicine fellowship at the Minneapolis Sports Medicine Center with David Fisher, M.D., who served as a team physician for the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Following the fellowship, he served a scholarship commitment in the U.S. Air Force as an orthopaedic surgeon for the 1st Fighter Wing at Langley Air Force Base in Langley, Va.

Dr. Fields then resided in Champaign, Ill., where, in addition to his general orthopaedic practice, his duties included team physician for the University of Illinois Fighting Illini.

For the past six years Dr. Fields has resided and practiced in Ellijay.
