Atlanta Braves to honor Tom Glavine with Braves Hall of Fame induction and number retirement on Aug. 6

The Atlanta Braves will pay tribute to their former pitcher Tom Glavine on Friday, August 6 by inducting him into the Braves Hall of Fame and retiring his uniform number. The induction will take place at a special luncheon and the uniform number retirement will occur in a pre-game ceremony that night before the Braves take on the San Francisco Giants.

"Tom has been, and continues to be, a very special part of the Atlanta Braves organization," said Atlanta Braves President John Schuerholz. "There's no greater honor than inducting him into our Hall of Fame and making sure his Braves uniform number 47 is retired and finds its rightful place alongside other great Braves Hall of Famers."

Glavine's number 47 will be the seventh Braves uniform number to be retired, joining Hank Aaron (44), Eddie Mathews (41), Dale Murphy (3), Phil Niekro (35), Warren Spahn (21) and Greg Maddux (31). The Braves also retired the number 42 along with all Major League Baseball teams to honor Jackie Robinson.

Glavine, who is currently a special assistant to team president John Schuerholz and is also a broadcaster on some Braves radio and TV broadcasts, spent 19 years in the Braves organization. He was drafted by the Braves in 1984 and was with the team through the 2002 season before he was signed as a free agent with the New York Mets. After five seasons with the Mets, Glavine returned to the Braves in 2008.

He ranks 21st on the Major League Baseball's career victory list, with 305, and he ranks fourth for most wins by a left-handed pitcher behind Warren Spahn, Steve Carlton and Eddie Plank. In 518 starts for the Braves, Glavine compiled a 244-147 record with a 3.41 ERA.

Glavine won the National League Cy Young Award in 1991 and again in 1998. In 1995 he was named the World Series MVP after going 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in the Braves' championship win over the Cleveland Indians.

He will join Hank Aaron, Bill Bartholomay, Lew Burdette, Skip Caray, Del Crandall, Ralph Garr, Tommy Holmes, Ernie Johnson, David Justice, Herman Long, Bill Lucas, Greg Maddux, Eddie Mathews, Dale Murphy, Kid Nichols, Phil Niekro, John Sain, Paul Snyder, Warren Spahn, Ted Turner, and Pete Van Wieren in the Braves Hall of Fame.

Evander Holyfield Makes History... Again!

Saturday night, the 47-year-old Holyfield became the oldest man to capture the World Heavyweight Championship, the fifth time in his storied career that the "Real Deal" has captured world title honors. Kia Fan Favorite Award to be presented following the game

Recognizing the loyal and tremendous support they have received this season, Atlanta Hawks players, coaches and the organization will extend special “thanks and appreciation” this Tuesday (April 14) when Fan Appreciation Night activities are held at Philips Arena. Tipoff for the game against the Miami Heat is set for 7:00 pm (doors open at 6:00).

Highlighting the evening’s activities is the presentation of the Kia Fan Favorite Award at the conclusion of the game. One winner has been chosen to participate in the ceremony recognizing the fans favorite Hawks player as determined through an online and in-store vote.

After the award presentation, Hawks players and coaches will again take an active role in the festivities and present lucky fans with their game worn jerseys or an autographed basketball. Colby Armstrong Honored as 2009 Dan Snyder Memorial Trophy Winner

Atlanta Thrashers forward Colby Armstrong was honored as this season’s Dan Snyder Memorial Trophy Winner, given annually to the team’s player who best embodies perseverance, dedication and hard work without reward or recognition, so that his teammates might succeed.

The trophy was presented in a special on-ice ceremony prior to tonight’s regular-season finale by the Snyder family, which included his father, Graham, mother, LuAnn, brother, Jake, and sister, Erika. Named in honor of former Thrasher Dan Snyder, the trophy has been awarded each season since 2003-04. Previous winners include Eric Perrin (2008), Vyacheslav Kozlov (2007), Niclas Havelid (2006) and Garnet Exelby (2004).

Armstrong, who is in his first full season with the Thrashers since being acquired from Pittsburgh in a trade on Feb. 26, 2008, has appeared in all 82 games this season and has set a career-high in goals with 21, while adding 18 assists. The 26-year-old native of Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, has served as an alternate captain for the Thrashers this season.

Thrashers Reassign Defenseman Clay Wilson to Chicago (AHL)

The Atlanta Thrashers have reassigned defenseman Clay Wilson to the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell.

Wilson, who was recalled on April 6, appeared in two games with Atlanta, recording four shots on goal and averaging 15:54 of ice time.

The 26-year-old has appeared in 68 AHL games this season with Syracuse and Chicago, recording 44 points (13 goals, 31 assists), and is tied for seventh among league defensemen in scoring. He shares second on the Wolves in assists, and ranks fourth in points and power play goals (seven). The 6-0, 195-pound defenseman has recorded 24 points (five goals, 19 assists) in 35 games with the Wolves since being acquired on Jan. 14. Wilson also registered one assist in five NHL games with Columbus earlier this season.

The Sturgeon Lake, Minn., native has appeared in 14 NHL games with Atlanta and Columbus, recording three points (one goal, two assists). He has played 278 career AHL games with Grand Rapids, Portland, Syracuse and Chicago, recording 171 points (46 goals, 125 assists) and a plus-29 rating. He has also seen action in 29 AHL Calder Cup Playoff games, earning 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in those contests.

Prior to his professional career, Wilson appeared in 148 games with Michigan Tech from 2001 to 2005, posting 57 points (17 goals, 40 assists).

Thrashers Recall Goaltender Ondrej Pavelec from Chicago (AHL); Reassign Goaltender Dan Turple

The Atlanta Thrashers have recalled goaltender Ondrej Pavelec from the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell. In addition, goaltender Dan Turple has been reassigned to Chicago.

Pavelec, 21, has appeared in 11 games over two stints with the Thrashers this season, posting a 3-6-0 record with a 3.55 goals-against average and a .884 save percentage. The 6-2, 200-pound goaltender made a career-best 43 saves on a career-high 46 shots on Nov. 30 vs. St. Louis.

The Kladno, Czech Republic native has also posted an 18-20-2 record with three shutouts, a 2.58 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage in 40 AHL games with the Wolves. Pavelec was honored as the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 22 after earning a 3-1-0 record with a 1.25 goals-against average and a .963 save percentage during that time.

Pavelec was selected by the Thrashers in the second round, 41st overall, of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

Turple, who was recalled by Atlanta on March 27, has appeared in 13 games this season with the Wolves, posting a 5-8-0 record, with a 2.94 goals-against average and a .897 save percentage. Turple made his Wolves debut on Nov. 1 and stopped 20-of-21 shots for his first-career AHL victory. He won his first four starts with Chicago from Nov. 1 to Nov. 19, earning a 1.97 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage during that span.

The 6-6, 230-pound goaltender has also appeared in 10 ECHL games this season with the Gwinnett Gladiators and Utah Grizzlies, registering a 2-4-3 record, a 3.79 goals-against average and a .884 save percentage in those games.

Turple. 24, was selected by the Thrashers in the sixth round, 186th overall, of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Atlanta Hawks' Al Horford Awarded Jason Collier Memorial Trophy

Award recognizes dedication to community service

Prior to this evening’s Atlanta Hawks vs. Orlando Magic game at Philips Arena, the Hawks’ Al Horford was awarded the Jason Collier Memorial Trophy by the organization for his dedication to community service.

The Jason Collier Memorial Trophy, named after the late Hawks center who passed away October 15, 2005, is presented annually to the individual who best exemplifies the characteristics Collier displayed off the court as a community ambassador.

An active participant in community and charitable initiatives, including STAR House and La Amistad, Horford purchases tickets for each Hawks game for underprivileged families through his Al’s Amigos program. In December, he hosted 25 children from the Stepping Ahead Program for a holiday party at Dave & Busters, treating everyone to dinner, arcade games and presents. Additionally, he purchased clothes, toys and food for five families from Traveler’s Aid of Metro Atlanta during the holidays through the Hawks’ Adopt-A-Family program.

Also a supporter of the Read to Achieve initiative (presented by Philips and Sprite), Horford recently paid a visit Northcutt Elementary School in College Park as part of the “What Keeps You Moving” Essay Contest. Deantae Birdsong, a fifth grade student at the school, won the contest and the special visit from Horford with his essay about physical fitness.

This is the fourth year the Hawks have awarded the trophy, as Horford joins past recipients Marvin Williams (2007-08) and two-time award winner Josh Childress (2005-06 and 2006-07) in receiving this honor.

Clayton State Track Club Peachtree Road Race Training Program Starts April 7

Starting on Tuesday, Apr. 7, and continuing for 13 Tuesdays through the end of June, the Clayton State Track Club (CSTC) and Clayton State University Head Track and Cross Coach Mike Mead will be holding a special training program for the Peachtree Road Race.

At a cost of just $25 per person, the CSTC/Peachtree Training Program will run from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. every Tuesday night, starting on Apr. 7 and running through June 30. Runners of all skill and interest levels are invited to take part, even if they’re not entered in the July 4 event.

Although the training program does not include an entry into the Peachtree Road Race, it does include a Clayton State Track Club t-shirt, one year’s membership in the Clayton State Track Club, and coaching from one of the state’s top collegiate coaches. The holder of nine “Coach of the Year” awards, and a member of the Atlanta Track Club’s masters team (his 10K PR is 30:54), Mead has led Clayton State’s men’s and women’s track and cross country programs to national prominence in the past 14 years, coaching three All-Americans in cross country and an even dozen in track and field.

Assisting Mead in coaching the CSTC/Peachtree Training Program will be Clayton State Assistant Cross County and Track Coach Hugh Toro, who has 17 years of coaching at the secondary school level, plus 11 years at Clayton State, and who has earned the title of “Mr. Peachtree” by running in every Peachtree Road Race since 1973.

Eighth Consecutive Year Historic Roswell to Host National Bicycle Races

Popular Mayor's Ride Returns for Families at Georgia Event

The 8th Annual Historic Roswell Criterium returns on Sunday, April 26, 2009 with a full schedule of events for professional cyclists and area residents. This year the event will be part of the USA Crits Speed Week racing series for elite athletes. Since 2001, the Historic Roswell Criterium has established itself firmly as one of the top single-day races in the United States, with 10 categorized contests for amateur and professional athletes. For local families and residents, the event has grown to a full-day festival, including a morning recreational adult bike ride with Mayor Jere Wood, an afternoon bicycle safety rodeo for children, and retail specials at local shops throughout the day.

"We are proud that the Historic Roswell Criterium continues to be a solid community event on the calendar in the metro area. The event attracts thousands of participants and spectators to this beautiful area each spring. It not only promotes healthy lifestyles, but it helps drive economic impact for Historic Roswell, bringing people back to eat and shop at local businesses throughout the year," said Michael Johnson, race director and member of Roswell Velo, Inc., the cycling club that handles logistics of the races.

Sunday, April 26, will begin with a recreational bicycle ride for all levels of cyclists, the Roswell Mayor's Ride. There are four ride options, ranging from six miles to 64 miles, with the start of the ride receiving an escort from Roswell Police. Rest stops are provided along the route, with commemorative t-shirts to all who register prior to April 20 Last year close to 350 people participated in the event, and raised awareness for Bike Roswell!, the grassroots organization that helped the city gain national recognition as a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community. Beginning at 11:00 a.m., a series of 10 bicycle races will take place on the one-mile route in Historic Roswell. The 2009 event will be part of the USA Crits Speed Week for professional cyclists from across North America, and the Georgia Cycling Grand Prix (a 12-race series). Speed Week, which offers $120,000 in prize money, is sanctioned by USA Cycling and is promoted by Swagger LLC, which also produces the Athens Twilight Criterium. Over $15,000 in prize money will be up for grabs in Roswell alone. The start line will again be in front of Founder's Hall on Canton Street and races will run from 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

While there are registration fees to participate in the races (from $35 to $50), it will be complimentary for children to participate in the Bicycle Rodeo and for spectators to watch the races. The Children's Bicycle Safety Rodeo will be managed by the Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell and is supported by Roswell Bicycles. Children can also participate in the Shimano Youth Series races. The youth races are complimentary to any children who complete the Rodeo and are held following the Women's Pro event, on the same race course. While not the fastest races of the day, the youth races are some of the most entertaining.

Vyacheslav Kozlov Nominated for NHL’s Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy

Atlanta Thrashers forward Vyacheslav Kozlov has been selected by the Atlanta chapter of the Professional Hockey Writer’s Association (PHWA) as the team’s nominee for the National Hockey League’s Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, given annually to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. This is the first time Kozlov has been nominated for the award.

Kozlov has registered 70 points (24 goals, 46 assists) through 76 games this season and is currently tied for second on the team in points and assists. The 36-year-old forward posted a season-high eight-game point streak from March 8 to March 21, earning 12 points (four goals, eight assists) in that span.

The native of Voskresensk, Russia recorded 41 points (17 goals, 24 assists) in 82 games in 2007-08 despite playing through shoulder and knee injuries which forced him to undergo two off-season surgeries to repair the damage. Kozlov has re-emerged this season as an offensive catalyst for the Thrashers and has already eclipsed last year’s point total by 29. Kozlov has proven to be a vital part of the league’s 10th best power play unit, currently ranking second in the NHL in power play points (42) and assists (30), as well as scoring a career-high 12 power play goals.

“It’s an honor to be nominated for this year’s Bill Masterton Award,” said Kozlov. “Injuries are no excuse but it was important for me to come back strong this year and contribute to helping the team.”

Kozlov has played in 1,121 career NHL games with the Thrashers, Sabres and Red Wings, posting 821 points (346 goals, 475 assists) while capturing back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1997 and 1998 with Detroit.

Kozlov was originally drafted by Detroit in the third round, 45th overall, in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. He was acquired by the Thrashers from Buffalo with a second-round selection in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft for a second-round selection and a third-round selection in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft on June 22, 2002.

The most recent winner of the Masterton Trophy was Jason Blake of the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 2007-08 season. The winner of the NHL’s Masterton Trophy is selected by a poll among the 30 chapters of the PHWA at the end of the regular season. The trophy was first presented by the NHL writers in 1968 to commemorate the late Bill Masterton. Masterton, who died on Jan. 15, 1968, was a player with the Minnesota North Stars who exhibited to a high degree the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Thrashers Recall Forward Brett Sterling from Chicago (AHL)

The Atlanta Thrashers have recalled forward Brett Sterling from the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League, according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell.

Sterling, 24, is tied for fifth on the Wolves with 31 points (16 goals, 15 assists) in 41 games this season. He shares third on the team in goals (16) and is fifth in power play goals (six). The 5-7, 175-pound left wing earned a season-high four points (two goals, two assists) last night vs. Iowa and has five points (three goals, two assists) in his last three games. Sterling, who missed 15 games due to injury from Feb. 6 to March 7, scored a goal in his return to the Wolves lineup on March 8 vs. Peoria. He posted a season-long four-game point streak from Nov. 22-29, recording eight points (four goals, four assists) during that span.

The Los Angeles native began this season with the Thrashers, recording one goal in three games before being assigned to Chicago on Nov. 7. Sterling, who was selected by the Thrashers in the fifth round (145th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, captured the Dudley “Red” Garrett Award as the AHL’s Rookie of the Year in 2006-07, following a 97 point (55 goals, 42 assists) rookie campaign. That season Sterling led the AHL in goals, becoming the first rookie to do so since 1989.

University of Georgia Football Coach Mark Richt will be the guest speaker at a semi-formal dinner banquet on Thursday, March 5th at the Georgia International Convention Center in College Park.

All proceeds from this wonderful evening will benefit the Children’s Village at Christian City. Christian City is a nondenominational nonprofit organization that has been caring for abandoned and abused children in a residential setting since opening the first cottage in 1965. Thrashers to Host 2009 Girls Hockey Showcase Weekend on Saturday, Feb. 28

The Atlanta Thrashers will host the 2009 Girls Hockey Showcase Weekend, in conjunction with the National Hockey League’s “Hockey is for Everyone” initiative, surrounding their game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, Feb. 28. The showcase consists of events and activities focusing on the growth of women’s hockey throughout the Southeast.

The festivities begin with three hockey clinics, hosted by U.S. Women’s Olympic Hockey Bronze Medal-winner Jamie Hagerman, at the Duluth IceForum from 9:30 to 10:50 a.m. (ages 6-12), 11 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. (ages 20 and up) and 12:25 to 1:40 p.m. (ages 13-19).

The activities continue at the CNN Center where Hagerman will participate in a scrimmage floor hockey game with over 40 girls from the Women’s Foundation youth focused program, GoGirlGo! These girls will be experiencing the game for the first time in Thrasherville from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Hagerman will also speak to the showcase participants about hockey and her experiences with the sport inside Philips Arena from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The day concludes with 12 local hockey players being selected to partake in pre-game introductions and stand next to their NHL counterparts during the nation anthem.

Jamie Hagerman, currently training with the U.S. Women’s Select Team in Minneapolis, Minn., won a Bronze Medal in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, helped the U.S. win its first World Championship in women’s hockey in 2005, and captured a Silver Medal at the 2005 Four Nations Cup.

The day’s activities are a part of the NHL’s annual “Hockey is for Everyone” month, a league-wide initiative aimed at promoting the diversity of hockey with the goal of raising awareness and celebrating the growth of the game. To date, “Hockey is for Everyone” has exposed close to 45,000 boys and girls to unique hockey experiences.

Philips Arena Doors to Open Early for Three Hawks Games in March

The Atlanta Hawks are recommending that fans arrive early for three home games in the month of March, as those with tickets will be able to enter Philips Arena 90 minutes before game time.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for the Sunday, March 1 Hawks vs. Cavaliers match-up (8 p.m. tipoff), at 6 p.m. for the Hawks vs. Celtics game (7:30 p.m. tipoff) on Friday, March 27, and 2 p.m. for the Hawks vs. Lakers contest (3:30 p.m. tipoff) on Sunday, March 29.

Doors will open at the usual time of 60 minutes before tipoff for the other nine home games in March.

Atlanta currently holds the fourth position in the Eastern Conference playoff race, 2.0 games in front of the Miami Heat.

Hawks Announce Season Ticket Pricing for 2009-10

Prices Remain Flat for Season Ticket Holders Acting Before April 1

The Atlanta Hawks have announced season ticket prices for the 2009-10 season, according to Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing Tracy White.

Any existing or new season ticket holder in any area that renews their tickets or purchases new season tickets prior to April 1 will see no cost increase from this year’s prices. Additionally, all fans can still capitalize on of one of the best values in sports, the $999 lower level season ticket. Season tickets start at $10 per game.

“This is a very exciting time for our franchise, and also a challenging economic time for everyone. We fully recognize and appreciate the important role our most valued customers play in the success of our team and organization,” White said. “We encourage our season ticket holders to take advantage of this early opportunity to lock in their seat location and price for next season.”

New season tickets for the 2009-10 season go on sale Sunday, March 1. In the interim, a $250 deposit secures the opportunity to attend a select-a-seat event prior to that night’s Hawks vs. Cavaliers game.

The Hawks are off to an 18-6 start at Philips Arena this season, the fourth-best home mark in the Eastern Conference. Overall, Atlanta is 29-21 with two games remaining before the All-Star break, the Hawks’ best record through 50 games since going 31-19 in 1998-99.

FDOT’s 511 system allows callers to access real-time road conditions, congestion and construction updates. By dialing 511, fans can stay informed on the roadways, plan alternate routes and arrive early Feb. 1 to support their team at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

“Approximately 100,000 people will travel to Tampa Bay for Super Bowl XLIII,” said Reid Sigmon, Executive Director of the Tampa Bay Super Bowl Host Committee. “We encourage everyone to call 511 and follow directional signage while traveling around the Bay area and Raymond James Stadium.”

The free 511 system is available for all interstate highways and Florida’s Turnpike. Florida travelers can reach the 511 system on any cell phone or landline, regardless of area code or service provider while traveling. Callers can get detailed regional information on roads leading to the stadium, such as I-275, I-75 and I-4.

Travelers can also save time and money by planning trips ahead of time by registering for free personalized My511 e-mail alerts on the 511TampaBay.com Web site. Recruiting Closer Announces its 2009 Preseason All-American Team

Recruiting Closer has announced its preseason college baseball All-American Teams. The three teams are comprised of the top collegiate players in the country.

University of North Carolina’s Dustin Ackley has been selected as the Recruiting Closer Preseason Player of the Year. Ackley had been named to the second team in each of the last two seasons. He is one of the purest hitters in college baseball. So far he has hit over .400 in each of his 2 seasons and will look to continue that streak in '09.

Steven Strasburg of San Diego State has been named the Recruiting Closer Preseason Pitcher of the year. Strasburg is a devastating right hander whose fastball sits in the mid to upper 90’s and has an overwhelming slider. He is first on most draft boards heading into the season.

STOMP to Teach Master Class at Crunch on Jan 29th

Patrons at the Crunch Buckhead gym are in for a special treat when cast members from the international percussion sensation STOMP teach a Master Class on Thursday, January 29 from Noon-1pm. “Stompers” will join Crunch instructors to bring some new moves to the floor when they teach a body percussion class! This will feature some of the smooth moves seen in the hit touring show and is free and open to the public, on a first come basis.

“We are so excited about having the ‘Stompers’ here at Crunch. It's a great opportunity for participants to learn the moves from the actual cast,” states, Jennifer Renfroe, Crunch's Regional Group Fitness Director.
