The 15-year-old golf phenom was surprised today by her favorite golfer, top LPGA player, Christina Kim, who showed up at her North Clayton High School to personally invite her to compete in the first-ever Mojo 6 (www.themojo6.com), a unique golf tournament being held in Jamaica, April 15-16, 2010. Nationwide Tour Returning to Athens in 2010 with new site: The Athens Classic at UGA will benefit need-based scholarships for UGA students

The University of Georgia and the PGA TOUR announced today that professional golf will remain in the Athens area for a fifth straight year – but with a new venue and host organization. The Nationwide Tour’s “Athens Classic at UGA” will be played at the UGA Golf Course and operated by the University’s Auxiliary Services Department. All proceeds from the event will support need-based scholarships for UGA students through the Arch Foundation.

“The University of Georgia is proud to be the host of the Athens Classic at UGA, and especially glad that the tournament will stay in the Athens area,” said UGA President Michael F. Adams. “This has been a great event for the community, and we look forward to teeing off next April and raising money for need-based scholarships.”

The tournament will build upon the success of the Athens Regional Foundation Classic, held from 2006-2009 at Jennings Mill Country Club. The event, which has boasted very strong community support and crowds, has showcased many UGA alumni over the years including Chip Beck, Matt Peterson, Brendon Todd, Justin Bolli, Ryan Hybl, Erik Compton, Bubba Watson, Chris Kirk, Franklin Langham, Tommy Tolles, Tim Simpson, David Denham, Scott Parel, Kevin Kisner and the Nationwide Tour’s first million dollar earner, Paul Claxton.

Although the 2010 Nationwide Tour schedule will not be finalized until the fall, it is expected that the Athens Classic at UGA will continue to be played some time in April.

"Athens has been very supportive of the Nationwide Tour since we first came here in 2006," said Nationwide Tour president Bill Calfee. "We are confident the association with the University of Georgia and its wonderful UGA Golf Course will take the Classic to new levels of impact and interest among sponsors and Bulldog fans. As the Athens Classic at UGA will be a continuation of the Athens Regional Foundation Classic, tournament records will be maintained. Patrick Sheehan won the 2009 event in a playoff over Michael Sim after both finished regulation play at 14-under par.

UGA joins only a handful of institutions of higher education to host a Nationwide Tour event since the Tour’s inception in 1990. Events have been held at Seven Oaks GC in Hamilton, N.Y. (Colgate University), Finkbine GC in Iowa City, Iowa (University of Iowa), Yale GC in New Haven, Conn. (Yale University) and the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M. (University of New Mexico). The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio has hosted the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational at its Scarlet Course since 2007.

Georgia Students Prepare to Aim High at 3rd Annual Archery Tournament

Close to 400 students throughout the state will compete on Friday, Feb. 13 in the 3rd annual National Archery in the Schools Georgia State Tournament.

The best-of-the-best from elementary, middle and high schools in 16 schools (from 13 counties) will convene in Perry for this tournament. The tournament is coordinated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division and is open to all state schools enrolled in the National Archery in the Schools program (NASP).

A total of 343 students in grades 4-12 have registered for the event. Participation in the shoot has nearly double in size since last year.

“We are so pleased to see the NASP program and participation in the state tournament grow each year,” says State Shooting Sports Program Manager Jennifer Pittman. “Archery is a sport that anyone – male or female, small or large – can find success as long as they practice and dedicate time to achieve their goals. It is a program that teaches concentration, hand-eye coordination, patience and determination – all of which mesh perfectly with school goals.”

State Tournament Division winners will have the opportunity to compete at the NASP National Tournament May 8-9, 2009 in Louisville, Kentucky. At the national tournament, teams and individuals from all participating NASP states and countries will vie for college scholarships and other prizes. At the state tournament, the highest scoring male and female archer will win one of two $1,000 college scholarships.

The state tournament is conducted at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in conjunction with the Georgia Wildlife Federation’s Great Outdoors Show. The Feb. 13 shoot will be held in the Miller Murphy Howard Building next to gate No. 24 (West Gate).

Teams of 16-24 students from each school will compete in three separate divisions: elementary (4th-6th grade); middle (7th-8th grade) and high (9th-12th grade). Archers will shoot at 10- and 15- meter intervals in six “flights.” An awards reception will follow completion of the last flight.

In addition to the tournament, there will be several activities for participants during the Great Outdoors Show. Admission is free for archers and registered coaches and $8 for observers. The Georgia Wildlife Federation provides food and refreshments for archers and registered coaches and allows use of the building for the tournament at no charge.

Jekyll Island Ready for Georgia-Florida Fans

Erik Compton Champions the Cause of Organ Donation As He Competes This Week to Win PGA Tour Card

(BUSINESS WIRE)--Just four months after his second heart transplant, Professional Golfer Erik Compton is back on the course this week, competing to achieve his lifetime goal—a card to play on the PGA Tour.

Perhaps cheering loudest for Compton will be the 90,000-plus Americans waiting on organ donor waiting lists. An average of 17 people die each day (over 6,000 each year) waiting for a transplant.

Though golf will be his focus this week as he competes in the first of three qualifying tournaments starting on Tuesday (October 21st) to earn the right to play with the likes of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, Compton will also be promoting a cause, literally near and dear to his new heart.

“Organ donation is literally the gift of life,” said the 28-year-old former University of Georgia All-American, who suffered a massive heart attack in October 2007. “I owe my life to two families and two donors, who made the decision to make available life-saving organs for transplants. I’m honored to be able to give back by supporting the Transplant Foundation in Miami and their effort to build awareness through the sale of a specialty Florida license tag—“Donate Organs. Pass it On.”

Both causes are generously displayed on Compton’s golf bag, shirt and hat. Compton also carries a special gift from a young athlete killed in a motorcycle accident—a strong and healthy new heart.

“I’m here today because of him,” said Compton, who hopes someday to meet the young donor’s parents.

Compton, who received his first heart transplant at the age of 12 as a result of heart disease, will be competing with 1,100 golfers competing across the country at 11 courses in the stage one qualifying round to ultimately earn a PGA Tour card. The PGA has granted Compton the right to use a cart during qualifying stages.

Slowly regaining his strength from a life-saving heart transplant, Compton’s golf swing is in top form, however, stamina is an issue, where walking four to five miles a day during a typical tournament has proved to be too taxing.

Recently in a warm-up tournament on the same Crandon Park Golf Course where he will compete in stage one Q School this week, Compton scored a sizzling 65, winning the Key Biscayne Open by six strokes. In fact, in three tournaments in which Compton has competed since his near fatal heart attack, he has played well, shooting 66, 67 and 65 respectively.

“It’s like throwing darts,” said Compton. “Golf is a game of skill. Once you’ve learned the skill, it never goes away. I’m swinging the clubs well enough to be competitive, I just need to get strong and healthy so I can get back to walking the course like everyone else.”

The PGA has given Compton a six-month rule waiver so he can play from a cart. He will have to reapply to continue at that time.

In passing the first qualifying stage, Compton’s next test will be a stage two qualifying tournament in Georgia, with the final qualifying tournament in Palm Springs, where 25 golfers will receive PGA Tour cards.

Sherreard Finishes Top 20 at British Open

Georgia State’s Tom Sherreard finished his week at the 137th British Open with a 2-over par 72. With winds gusting at up to 40 miles per hour, Sherreard posted a 14-over 294 to finish in a thirteen-way tie for 19th.

Padraig Harrington repeated as British Open champion, shooting a 69 to best Ian Poulter by four shots with Greg Norman in third.

Sherreard’s 72 gave him his second best round of the week, good enough to vault him 16 spots up the Sunday leaderboard.

After opening his final round with three pars, Sherreard hit a skid bogeying holes four through seven, the most treacherous stretch of the golf course this week.

Posting a 4-over 38 on the front, Sherreard battled back towards par with an outstanding eagle-birdie finish. Sherreard’s eagle at the 17th was one of only four on the day, the fourth belonging to champion Padraig Harrington.

Making Sherreard’s run in the Open even more astonishing was his ascent from 90th at the end of Thursday’s round to a final tie for 19th.

Sherreard’s 19th place finish ties him with this year’s Masters champion Trevor Immelman, three-time major winner Phil Mickelson, and former PGA champion Davis Love III.

His finish bests those of two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen, top-ten ranked Sergio Garcia, and former Georgia Tech golfer David Duval.Thomas Sherreard was one of two amateurs to make the cut at Royal Birkdale. Many other top golfers were eliiminated in the two-day cut.

Sherreard made his final round a memorable one, too, as he chipped in for eagle at the 17th hole and made birdie on No. 18 en route to a 72.

The two amateurs who made the cut both finished in the top 20. Sherreard had one of the just 17 sub-par rounds in the entire four days of the British Open.

Golf Tournament Scheduled to Benefit Lynn Wheeler

Monday, July 14 will be a big day for Lynn Wheeler, wife of the head of the Clayton State University Music Department, Dr. Douglas Wheeler.

That’s the day that the Wheeler’s church, Covenant Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, Ga., will be hosting the Lynn Wheeler Benefit Golf Tournament at Eagle’s Brooke County Club in Locust Grove, Ga. The personification of determination and courage, Lynn Wheeler was diagnosed with cancer in February 2005. She went into remission in September of that same year, only to suffer a serious spinal injury in an auto accident on Christmas Day, 2005, an accident that has confined her to a wheelchair and breathing with the help of a respirator.

Undaunted, the Wheelers have remained strong members of Covenant Presbyterian, and Lynn continues to serve in the church’s children’s ministry and to teach piano. The church’s fund raising golf tournament for the Wheelers will feature a clinic by former PGA touring professional Greg Powers, lunch provided by Chick-Fil-A, door prizes, raffles, longest drive and closest to the pin contests, and a new 2008 Ford, courtesy of Allan Vigil Ford, for a hole-in-one.

The Lynn Wheeler Benefit Golf Tournament is set up for four-person teams in a Ft. Lauderdale format with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Single players may register for $95. Four person teams may register for $380.

Little League Tournaments Start June 28 for Georgia District 4

District 4 Little League Tournaments will be played in Senoia at the LeRoy
Johnson Ballfields beginning June 28.

Twelve teams from the district will compete in the 9/10 Year Old Baseball
Tournament. The winner of the tournament will represent District 4 at the
State Tournament in Warner Robins beginning July 19. Warner Robins is the
home of the 2007 Little League World Series Champions.

Two teams will compete for the District Championship in the newest
tournament division, 10/11 Year Old Baseball. The winner will play in the
State Tournament at Murphey Candler Little League beginning July 12.

In the Little League Baseball division for 11 and 12 year olds, eight teams
will compete for the Championship. The winner will go on to compete at the
State Tournament hosted by Belvedere Little League, Flat Shoals Park in
Decatur, beginning July 19.

Junior League Baseball for 13/14 year olds and Senior League Baseball for
14/16 year olds will each have 5 teams. The Junior State Tournament will
begin July 12 in Hart County and the Senior State Tournament will begin July
19 in Oconee County.

Big League Baseball for 16/18 year olds will have teams representing
District 4 and West Point. The Champion will compete in West Point at the
State Tournament beginning July 12.

Senior League Softball for 13/16 year old girls will be played between
Senoia Area Little League and West Point Little League. The winner will
move on to the State Tournament in West Point beginning July 12.
