Fiesta Atlanta Announces 5K Race Benefiting Children's Healthcare of Atlanta

Six Gap Century Offers Two New Jersey Designs for All Cyclists

Two Weeks & 650 Spots Remain for Sept. 26 Bicycle Event

The countdown clock at www.cyclenorthgeorgia.com reads “15 Days” until the start of the 22nd Annual Six Gap Century & Three Gap Fifty, organized by the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Chamber of Commerce. Registrations are still available for all three ride options on Sunday, September 26, 2010.  Only 650 spots remain for the popular bicycle tour of the North Georgia Mountains, from the ultra-challenging century, to the 58.4 three gap ride, and the 35-mile Valley Ride. The event is expected to reach its goal of 2,500 registered riders.
To commemorate one of the largest and oldest single-day bicycle tours in the Southeast, organizers have introduced two new souvenir jerseys created by Hincapie Sportswear.  There are a total of six different jersey designs from Hincapie for sale on the event web site. All jerseys are $65 online, and all registered riders receive 15% discount for an online purchase. Official Six Gap socks will also be available this year, available at the Bike Expo.

Hincapie Sportswear also creates the special award jerseys presented to the King of the Mountain and Queen of the Mountain competitions this year. Four individuals (two age groups for males and females) will be crowned as the top climbers in the Six Gap event, using a combined time for climbing Hogpen Gap and Wolfpen Gap. Of the two climbs, Hogpen Gap, on Georgia SR 348, rises to 3800 feet over 9.6 miles, and has a two-mile section with gradients of 12-14%.

The Six Gap Century covers a total of 11,200 feet of climbing over 104 miles. The Three Gap Fifty option covers almost 6,400 feet of climbing on a 58-mile route. And the new 35-mile Valley Ride has 2,900 vertical feet along the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The majority of participants are “Six Gappers”, with 86% being male and living in the Southeast. A total of 35 states and countries were represented last year on all rides, including California, Minnesota, and Texas. Proceeds from the event help fund community initiatives for the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Chamber of Commerce, a 501 c (6) not-for-profit organization. The Six Gap Century has become one of the largest events for the chamber.

Online registration is $50 per person for any of the three ride options until September 23.  After that date, participants can register in Dahlonega for $55 per person at the Bike Expo on Saturday, September 25. The Bike Expo will be held on the Historic Dahlonega Square and it is free for all visitors. All participants are encouraged to attend the Bike Expo on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. to pickup registration packets and visit sponsor exhibits.  Sunday event registration will near the start line at the Lumpkin County High School, two miles north of downtown Dahlonega, from 6:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

DETAILS:

• Six Gap Century – 7:30 a.m. start - Thisultra-challenging route takes you up and down six of the steepest climbs in the North Georgia Mountains, with more than 11,200 feet of vertical climbing over the 104-mile course. Elevations for the six gaps in this ride range from 2,949 feet to 3,490 feet.
• Three Gap Fifty – 8:30 a.m. start –Half the gaps for participants who want a shorter ride but just as much scenery and challenging climbs.  This course is 58 miles and elevations range from 3,109 feet to 3,280 feet.
• Valley Ride – 8:30 a.m. start - This 35-mile ride option is a great introduction to the rolling terrain in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, featuring the scenic areas of the Yahoola Valley and DeSoto Falls near Turner's Corner.
• KOM Competition –Two climbs will be timed for registered riders on the Six Gap route only. Timing will be computed using AMB ProChip System. There will be two age groups for males and females for a total of four winners – Male/Female (34 and under), Male/Female (35 and over). Only two climbs (Hog Pen and Wolf Pen) will be timed; the event is a ride, not a race. There were two winners in 2009 – Top Male, Eric Murphy (Athens, Ga) total KOM time 0:44:38.558, and Top Female, Debbie Milne (Belden, Miss) total KOM time 0:50:52:362.
• 2010 Bike Expo –Held Saturday, Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m on the Historic Dahlonega Square. All cyclists are encouraged to attend for early pick up of registration packets, to avoid long lines on Sunday morning.   The Bike Expo offers interactive exhibits and prizes from event sponsors. Pombo Takes the Win While Megenbier Claims the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Championship at Road Atlanta

/PRNewswire/ -- For the third consecutive race weekend, the drivers of the SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup had to navigate a rain-soaked track on race day. This added an interesting but familiar twist to the final race of the year, which was contested on the 12-turn, 2.54-mile road course at Road Atlanta.

When the drivers arrived at the track, they saw that the series' technicians had installed the grooved Pirelli rain tires that would make their 14 laps of racing action more manageable. When the race began, Juan Pablo Sierra Lendle held the lead he gained from winning the pole position, but it didn't take Mark Pombo long to show who is boss on his home track. The Duluth, Georgia native took the lead in Turn 10 on the first lap, and he never looked back. The top three race finishers included Pombo, Andrew Cordeiro (2nd) and Juan Pablo Sierra Lendle (3rd).

"There's something about racing in the rain that really works well for me because the two races I've won this year have been on a wet track," Pombo said. "This win is really bittersweet for me because if it weren't for a couple of bad breaks, I feel as though I might have had a chance to fight with Timmy (Megenbier) for the Championship. However, I think it's pretty neat that I've won the first race for the series last year and my final race this year. I'll be too old to race in the Jetta TDI Cup again next year, so it's great to be able to go out on top."

While Pombo took the Road Atlanta trophy, there was another race going on today. Timmy Megenbier and Andy Lee came into the weekend fighting for the series Championship and its $100,000 prize. Megenbier brought a 39-point lead into the race, and it was apparent from the start that he was taking a conservative approach to the race in order to maintain his spot on top. Naturally, the rain caused several dramatic spins and accidents, but the pair was able to avoid trouble with Lee placing sixth and Megenbier 11th. While Lee was able to cut into the Melrose Park, Illinois native's lead, Megenbier's mid-pack finish was enough to maintain a 29-point advantage over Lee and give him the Championship. Pombo's race win vaulted him two positions in the standings to third.

"I knew what I had to do to achieve my ultimate goal of winning the Championship," Megenbier said. "After being on the podium nearly every race this season, it was a real challenge to hold myself back so that I didn't potentially risk my season. I had a couple of close calls out there today with the rain and people spinning in front of me, but thankfully I was able to hold on. Being named the Champion is a dream come true for me, and my hope is that this will lead to much bigger things for me down the road."

While the series' regulars had previous experience battling the elements, the guest drivers experienced an added obstacle today. However, both journalist Jeremy Shaw and Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford avoided trouble, with Shaw placing 12th and Whitford 18th.

"This entire weekend was quite the experience for me," Whitford said. "First of all, I was driving a totally different car than I have competed in before. Secondly, I have never raced in the rain. Add the two together, and it sounds like a recipe for disaster. However, I was able to keep the car on track and in one piece for the entire race. Considering the conditions, I was really amazed at how well these cars held up to the demands of racing. Several years ago, nobody would have guessed that you could race a diesel, but these Jetta TDIs are awesome little cars, and I think the fans that showed up early to the track today got a great show."

At the end of the day, it was fitting that tire grip and handling were the two factors that decided the race. First year series sponsor Pirelli had brought more than 100 tire dealers to the track, and they got to see first hand how the products perform under challenging conditions.

"While I'm sure that some of the drivers weren't pleased to see the rain today, I don't think we could have asked for a better demonstration of our product," said Rafael Navarro, Pirelli Director of Media Communications and Motorsports. "Our involvement in this series has far surpassed our expectations, and I look forward to a bright future with Volkswagen and continuing to contribute to the environmentally-conscious spirit of the series in 2010."

Run for University of West Georgia Almost Here

Early registration for the 24th annual Run for UWG (University of West Georgia) is ongoing through Friday, Sept. 25, ending at 5 p.m. Registering early guarantees a tee shirt and reduced rates of $10 for individuals and $15 for families. All fees go toward the Annual Fund and student scholarship. After September 25 registration increases by $5.

The event features three races suitable for every age beginning with a Tot-Trot for ages 2 to 6, a one-mile walk/run and a 5K event. The 5K race will have awards for the top three finishers in a variety of age and gender divisions ranging from 11 years to 70 and over.

Residents of Atlanta Braved the Heat and Took to the Streets of 'Hot'Lanta for Red Bull Soapbox Race

/PRNewswire/ -- Red Bull Soapbox Race Atlanta featured some of the most outrageous racing around as 39 teams cruised and tumbled down 10th Street near Piedmont Park. An estimated crowd of 48,500 fans lined the streets and sidewalks, resembling a typical Atlanta rush hour traffic jam. The course presented obstacles with a few twists and turns and a daring jump that sent several crafts crumbling to their demise. This isn't your average derby. Red Bull Soapbox Race is judged on three criteria: creativity, showmanship and speed. After the final tally, it was "Beer Connoisseur" who claimed the top spot. "This was completely unexpected," said Christopher Miller. "I thought we had a chance, but had no idea that we'd pull it off. We made some lifetime memories today that will never go away."

While some contestants took a road trip of several hundred miles, it was an Atlanta sweep on the podium. "Equus Vires Maximus" rode their chariot into second place and frat boys, "The Tekes," finished in third.

RATE MY RIDE

The panel of judges, scoring creativity and showmanship, included professional skateboarder and "Life of Ryan" reality TV star Ryan Sheckler, fashion designer Mychael Knight and junior pro surfer Evan Geiselman. However, the judges weren't the only ones who had a say in this competition. Team "Respect My Authority" from Tampa, FL captured the hearts of the fans to win the "People's Choice Award" with their supersized big wheel. "We came to Atlanta to win the People's Choice Award. This is what we came for and we accomplished our goal," said Aaron Price.

CRASH TEST DUMMIES

Even though this was a race, not all of the crafts made it to the finish line. Some vehicles met their end after facing the perilous jump but took the fall in stride and entertained the crowd by finishing the race on foot. Nobody did it with more style than "Team Fur Bus" which captivated the crowd with their spectacular crash and sprint for the finish as they pushed their fur covered craft over the jump and passed the finish line. Additionally, The Candy Man Can was ultra-safety-oriented, remembering to utilize their fire extinguisher upon crashing into the hay bales to add to their overall performance.

The global event dates back to 2000 when it first took place in Belgium and Atlanta became the seventh pit stop in the US. After its debut in the Southeast, Red Bull Soapbox Race will hit the West Coast on September 26, 2009 in downtown Los Angeles.

Main Street Newnan’s Sunrise on the Square Road Race

Dust off those running shoes! Main Street Newnan’s Annual Mike Fitzpatrick Ford’s Sunrise on the Square Road Race is planned for Saturday, September 5th.

The One Mile Walk/Run begins at 7:45 a.m., followed by the 5K at 8:00 a.m. There will be a short “Tot Trot” following the race. Runners will gather on West Broad Street for the start of the race. The race course continues to Newnan High School and through historic neighborhoods and then finishes at the square.

The entry fee is $20 for runners if received by September 3rd and is $25 on the day of the race. All participants will receive a 100% cotton long sleeved road race t-shirt. Beverages and light refreshments will be available. Tot Trotters will receive a short sleeved youth size t-shirt.

The road race is a fundraiser for the Main Street Newnan program, which hosts about 40 special events throughout the year in downtown Newnan. Along with Main Street Newnan, sponsors of the road race include Mike Fitzpatrick Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Piedmont Newnan Hospital, Coweta Fayette EMC Natural Gas, Bank of Coweta, and Synergy Fitness.

There will be prizes given out to top finishers in male and female categories based on age groups. Non-runners have the phantom runner option, which allows people to support the cause without making the run. Phantom runners can donate to the Main Street program and receive a t-shirt.
The road race is a part of Main Street’s Labor Day festivities. The Annual Labor Day Sidewalk Sales kicks off at 9 a.m. on Friday and continues on Saturday. The ever-popular Market Days on the Square will also be featured on Saturday.

This is great single and double track off-road running experience. The race will start in an open field (required for spacing) but will soon lead into the woods. The terrain is made up of a little bit of everything, rolling hills, climbs, single track, double track, roots, gravel and concrete drive along with some technical sections. The course is beautiful and offers something for every runner truly wishing to 'ditch the city'.

Top Professional Cyclists Return to Georgia for Historic Roswell Criterium

11 Races in One Day Include Children’s Event and Two Junior Races

The 8th Annual Historic Roswell Criterium returns on Sunday, April 26, 2009 with a full day of bicycle racing that includes many of the nation's top professional cyclists. With the cancellation of the Tour de Georgia this year, the Historic Roswell Criterium remains the only national, spring-time bicycle race in metro Atlanta, and the best bet for race fans to watch these elite professionals in action.

Since the first event in 2001, the Historic Roswell Criterium has grown to hosting over 450 elite racers, 350 Mayor's Ride participants and 5,000 spectators. The event attracts some of the best cycling talent from across the Southeast and abroad. In 2003 American Jonas Carney won the men's Pro 1/2 category event (the top race for professional men), and no American has won the event since. Professional riders from Australia, New Zealand and Canada have dominated the podium in the eight-year history of the criterium, including Tour de Georgia stage winner Gord Fraser (CAN), who won twice for Health Net presented by Maxxis.

This year watch the front of the Peloton to include riders from national teams like OUCH, Fly V Australia, Team Type I, Team Hotel San Jose, and Kelly Benefit. Team OUCH features John Murphy, who lives in Athens, Ga., and finished 5th overall last year in the National Racing Calendar (NRC) points competition. His teammate, Karl Menzies of Australia, looks strong this year with a second-place finish this month in Tour of the Battenkill (N.Y.). The new Fly V Australia presented by Successful Living Foundation team is bringing Bernie Sulzberger, the reigning Australian Crit Champion, and Jonathan Cantwell (formerly with Jittery Joe's), a sprinter who won a stage at Redlands Bicycle Classic in March. Team Type 1 will bring a large team to Roswell, led by racers/team founders Joe Eldridge and Phil Southerland, both who live in Atlanta, Ga.

On the women's side, Georgia's own Tina Mayolo-Pic has mastered the field of the Women's Pro race by winning five out of seven years. Pic, who resides in Buford, Ga., is a five-time U.S. National Criterium champion and won the NRC women's title for a fifth time in 2008. Pic is expected to return this Sunday to defend her 2008 title, racing for Colavita/Sutter Home Pro Cycling. One of her top competitors will be two-time NRC winner and 2006 Historic Roswell champion Laura van Gilder, racing this week for Mellow Mushroom.

All races for the Historic Roswell Criterium will take place on the one-mile route that features a start/finish on Canton Street at Founder's Hall. This year's event will be part of the USA Crits Speed Week for professional cyclists from across North America, and the Georgia Cycling Grand Prix (a 12-race series). Speed Week, which offers $120,000 in prize money, is sanctioned by USA Cycling and is promoted by Swagger LLC, which also produces the Athens Twilight Criterium. Over $15,000 in prize money will be up for grabs in Roswell alone. Races in Roswell will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a Juniors event, and finish at 6:00 p.m. with the featured Men's Pro 1/2 event, which should finish close to 7:30 p.m.

The registration fees for junior, elite and professional races range from $35 to $50, and are for experienced cyclists only. The Children's Bicycle Safety Rodeo, managed by the Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell, is free for children six to 12. Children who complete the Rodeo are invited to participate in the Shimano Youth Series races, held following the Women's Pro event on the pro race course. There are also recreational bicycle activities at 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning, with ride options of six to 64 miles with the Mayor's Ride. The Family Ride at 8:00 a.m. from East Roswell Park is free.

The 8th Annual Historic Roswell Criterium returns on Sunday, April 26, 2009 with a full schedule of events for professional cyclists and area residents. This year the event will be part of the USA Crits Speed Week racing series for elite athletes. Since 2001, the Historic Roswell Criterium has established itself firmly as one of the top single-day races in the United States, with 10 categorized contests for amateur and professional athletes. Rest stops are provided along the route, with commemorative t-shirts to all who register prior to April 20 Last year close to 350 people participated in the event, and raised awareness for Bike Roswell!, the grassroots organization that helped the city gain national recognition as a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community. Beginning at 11:00 a.m., a series of 10 bicycle races will take place on the one-mile route in Historic Roswell. The 2009 event will be part of the USA Crits Speed Week for professional cyclists from across North America, and the Georgia Cycling Grand Prix (a 12-race series). Speed Week, which offers $120,000 in prize money, is sanctioned by USA Cycling and is promoted by Swagger LLC, which also produces the Athens Twilight Criterium. Over $15,000 in prize money will be up for grabs in Roswell alone. The start line will again be in front of Founder's Hall on Canton Street and races will run from 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

While there are registration fees to participate in the races (from $35 to $50), it will be complimentary for children to participate in the Bicycle Rodeo and for spectators to watch the races. The Children's Bicycle Safety Rodeo will be managed by the Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell and is supported by Roswell Bicycles. Children can also participate in the Shimano Youth Series races. The youth races are complimentary to any children who complete the Rodeo and are held following the Women's Pro event, on the same race course. While not the fastest races of the day, the youth races are some of the most entertaining.

Former NFL Player, Emory Alum to Lead Forum on Race and Athletics March 25

An in-depth look at the ways in which race and sports have been intertwined at Emory University will be held Wednesday, March 25, when the university's Transforming Community Project holds a forum on "Changing the Game: Race and Sports at Emory." The event begins at 4 p.m. in Cox Hall on the Emory campus and is free and open to the public.

Opening remarks will be given by Emory alumnus Pellom McDaniels III, a seven-year member of the National Football League (1993-1999), as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons, and one of only a handful of former NFL players to earn a Ph.D. He also is a poet, artist and a teacher.

Now an assistant professor of history and American studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, McDaniels received both his master of arts degree (2006) and his doctoral degree (2007) in American studies from Emory's Graduate Institute of Liberal Arts with his dissertation “The Angle of Ascent: Race, Class, Sport, and the Representations of African American Masculinity." McDaniels’ publications also include “My Own Harlem’ (1998), “You Want to Be Pro” (2000) and “We’re American Too: The Negro Leagues and the Philosophy of Resistance” (2004).

The forum will be moderated by Emory alumnus Amri Johnson, a member of the Emory Alumni Board and its diversity and community board.

Tim Downes, director of athletics and recreation at Emory
Lloyd Winston, former head coach of the men’s basketball team (1987-1992) and first African-American head coach at the university
Christy Thomaskutty, head women’s basketball coach
Jason Campbell, a member of the track and field program, and
Amelia McCall of the volleyball team.

The panel discussion was made possible through the Transforming Community Project, a five-year initiative begun in 2005 to document the university’s past and confront current challenges around the issue of race, as well as the Caucus of Black Emory Alumni; the President’s Commission on Race and Ethnicity; Public Humanities Race and Difference Initiative; Emory Athletics and the Black Graduate Student Association.

Corvette Racing, Penske Porsches Win Green Challenge(TM) World Debut

PRNewswire/ -- A world debut only ever happens once. And these will be the names to be remembered as the inaugural winners of the Green Challenge at the American Le Mans Series' signature endurance race - Petit Le Mans - at Road Atlanta Saturday:

-- Porsche ... and its Penske RS Spyder team of Pat Long, Sascha Maassen and Emmanuel Collard

-- GM/Chevrolet ... and its Corvette Racing team of Johnny O'Connell, Jan Magnussen and Ron Fellows.

They earned the first ever Green Challenge trophies in their respective prototype (Porsche) and GT (Corvette) classes. Each had the best score in class for overall performance, fuel efficiency (petroleum displaced) and environmental impact (greenhouse gas emissions) over the 1,000-mile, 2.54-mile road course.

The award was created in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Energy and SAE International, the world's leading automotive engineering organization. On hand to present each trophy were Margo T. Oge, the EPA's Director of the Office of Transportation and Air Quality; Pat Davis, DOE's leading official for vehicle technologies and renewable energy and efficiencies; and Dave Schutt, SAE International's COO and Executive Vice President.

The American Le Mans Series is the only major race series in the world in which all cars race on not one, not two, but three alternative 'street legal' fuels: clean sulfur-free diesel, E10 and cellulosic E85. "Street legal" refers to fuels that are virtually the same as the consumer purchases at the fuel station. An electric hybrid is scheduled to make its debut shortly, perhaps at the season finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, October 18.

Many, including Oge, believe the Green Challenge represents a real game changer within the motorsports and automotive industry.

"Racing has always been associated with high power and fast driving as well as innovation in safety and performance," said Oge. "But [up until now] we have never been able to put racing and green(ing) together. The truth is we are facing two very severe issues in this country. We have to be self-sufficient when it comes to energy. Burning fossil fuels creates greenhouse gas emissions and has severe consequences. Our hope is by starting here and introducing environmentally friendly technologies, we will continue and transfer such developments to what you and I drive on a daily basis. I applaud the American Le Mans Series and all involved in this effort."

Often viewed as the most sophisticated and technical racing series in the world in which technology transfers directly from the race car to the customer showroom car, the American Le Mans Series has become the global leader in green racing. The 11 automobile marquees that race in the Series - Audi, Acura, Aston Martin, BMW ('09), Corvette, Dodge, Porsche, Ferrari, Mazda, Panos and Ford - readily admit that the relevancy of the American Le Mans Series and its ability to create an environment to develop technologies is one of the primary reasons they race in the world's leading sports car series.

Run for A DAY for UWG

The much-anticipated First National Bank of Georgia Run for A DAY will be held on Thursday, Oct. 2, with the race lineup located at the University Community Center.

The FNBG Run features three races suitable for every age beginning with a Tot-Trot for ages 2 to 6 at 5:15 p.m. The fun continues with a one-mile walk/run at 5:45 p.m. and a 5K event is at 6:15 p.m. The 5K race will have awards for the top three finishers in a variety of age and gender divisions ranging from 11 years to 70 and over.

Pre-registration guarantees a tee shirt and costs $10 for individuals, $15 for families and $5 for UWG students with a current student I.D. The deadline for pre-registration is on Friday, Sept. 26, at 5 p.m. Registration after the early deadline is $15 for individuals, $20 for families and $7 for UWG students. There is no registration fee for the Tot-Trot Run.

Pre-registration forms can be found online, at the UWG Campus Center, the UWG Visitor’s Center on Maple Street and at the National Bank of Georgia branches. The race is a rain or shine event with race day registration beginning at 4 p.m. at the UCC.
