Road Closures for The Peachtree Road Race

According to the Atlanta Track Club, the following road closures will be in effect on Saturday, July 4th, for the running of the Peachtree Road Race.

Start Area Road Closures:
Streets around the start area will close at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 4:
• Peachtree Road from Lenox Road to Peachtree Dunwoody Road
• Around Lenox Road from Peachtree Road to Lenox Road
• Lenox Road from Peachtree Road to Ferncliff Road
• Buckhead Loop from Peachtree Road to GA 400
• Phipps Boulevard from Buckhead Loop to Wieuca Road
• Wieuca Road from Old Ivy Road to Roxboro Road
• Roxboro Road from Kingsboro Road to Peachtree Dunwoody Road
• Pritchard Road from Roxboro Road to Oak Valley Road
• Lakeside Road from Pritchard Road to Kingsboro Road
• Kingsboro Road from Roxboro Road to Lenox Road
• Oak Valley Road from Peachtree Road to E. Paces Ferry Road
• Once the start area is secure, Atlanta Police will begin to close the course through the
finish area.

Finish Area Road Closures:
• 10th Street from Charles Allen to Monroe Dr. will be closed starting on Thursday, July 2
to Saturday, July 4.
• Monroe Drive will close between Virginia Ave. and Kanuga St. at 5 a.m. on Saturday, July
4 and will remain closed until around noon.
• 10th Street from Charles Allen Drive to Monroe Drive will re-open around 3p.m. on July 4

Electronic Timing Added for all Participants in the AJC Peachtree Road Race

The Atlanta Track Club, organizer of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road
Race, is adding electronic timing for all participants for the 40th edition of the event. Previously, only runners in Time Group One and the seeded waves - approximately 7,500 runners - received timing devices with their race packets. This year, all 55,000 participants will be officially timed.

“We are always looking at ways to improve the event experience for participants in the AJC Peachtree Road Race,” stated Tracey Russell, Executive Director of the Atlanta Track Club. “Providing official timing for all participants will give runners the opportunity to see how they perform in one of the largest road races in the world.”

The light-weight, one-time-use D-Tag attaches to participants’ shoes and is activated when they cross the start line. The ChronoTrack D-Tag system was recently used at the Atlanta Track Club’s other signature event, The Weather Channel Atlanta Marathon and Half Marathon, this
past Thanksgiving and was well-received by event participants and race volunteers.

“With an event the size of the Peachtree, using traditional forms of electronic timing wouldn’t work because chip retrieval after the runners cross over the finish line often causes bottlenecks with that high of volume over a short period of time,” commented Jon Hughes, President of Event Marketing and Management International (EMMI), the official timing company of the AJC Peachtree Road Race. “The ChronoTrack D-Tag system eliminates the need to
retrieve the timing devices when runners cross the finish, and we are excited to incorporate this new timing technology into the largest race in the U.S.”

The 40th running of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road race will take place on Saturday, July 4, 2009. The race begins on Peachtree Road by Lenox Square and finishes on 10th Street near Piedmont Park.

Atlanta Braves Celebrate Independence Day Weekend with a Salute to Our Troops and an "All American Fireworks Spectacular" on Friday, July 4th

Independence Day celebrations at Turner Field will honor members of the United States military and their families, and a post-game "Salute to America Fireworks Spectacular," presented by Publix Super Markets, will feature a dazzling display of pyrotechnics, choreographed to patriotic music, that will light up the Atlanta skyline in red, white and blue.

The Braves holiday-weekend festivities will continue with a free concert by two-time Grammy Award-winning group Arrested Development in Fan Plaza on Saturday, July 5th. Arrested Development will perform in Fan Plaza beginning at 5:30, and will make an encore appearance in Fan Plaza after the game.

Arrested Development's lead female vocalist, Tasha LaRae, will also perform the national anthem on Friday, July 4th. Operation Homefront Georgia will bring together volunteers from the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and National Guard to carry the largest American flag ever displayed at Turner Field during pre-game ceremonies. More than 350 military families will join Operation Homefront at the game, including soldiers wounded in action from Fort Gordon, Georgia. Tributes on BravesVision from Major League Baseball and the Atlanta Braves will thank military men and women for their service and celebrate the history of our nation.

Serving as the Braves' Honorary Team Captain for the evening on July 4th will be Captain Joseph Anthony, of Richmond, Virginia, a 16 year veteran of the United States Army. Captain Anthony, a decorated soldier, is currently serving in Iraq, and will return home to the United States shortly before Independence Day. His awards and decorations include: the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal (with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Achievement Medal (with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters), the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Combat Action Badge, the Expert Field Medical Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.

For games throughout the July 4 weekend and on September 11th, all Major League Baseball teams will wear "Stars & Stripes" caps that are available for sale to the public with a portion of the proceeds going to Welcome Back Veterans.

7:30 p.m. - Braves Honorary Team Captain, Captain Joseph Anthony, to exchange line up cards with game officials and coaches
7:35 p.m. - Atlanta Braves vs. Houston Astros first pitch
