Fayette: New Youth Air Rifle Club Sets Open Registration Date

Fayette County Shooting Sports has announced the date of the first parent’s orientation and open registration which will be held on August 8, 2009 at Autrey’s Armory in Fayetteville at 10:00 am. Parent’s interested in learning more about the programs that will be offered for youth’s age 9 to 15 are encouraged to attend this informative session. More information will also be available at www.eteamz.com/fcss.

Fayette County Shooting Sports will offer in its inaugural season a one day basic air rifle safety course and an 8-week Junior Olympic style four position development program.

The basic safety course is tailored to those who have or will soon have an air rifle for home use, but it’s also a pre-requisite for participating in the four position development program.

The four position development program is for those who simply want to improve their marksmanship skills as well as those who want to experience the excitement of air rifle competitions and possibly realize their Olympic dreams.

The club has six USA Shooting Level 1 Coaches, which is the governing body of the nation’s Olympic shooting program.

Although the club is new to Fayette County, Club President Todd Day stated he "would like for everyone to know that the leadership of this club has been working together for years as leaders in the local scout program and as instructors and range safety officers for the ranges at the Boy Scout’s Camp Thunder in Molena, GA. "

Day continued, “We look forward to the opportunity to bring the air rifle program to Fayette County. We spent a lot of time last year at Camp Thunder working with boys from all over this region but at one point we realized that over 30 boys participating in that multi-county program were from right here in Fayette.”

Another reason that Day gave for starting this new program was that it will enable the club to meet more often and to offer those who want to enter the competitive side of the sport a better opportunity to compete with different organizations. It will also open up an opportunity for the girls to compete.

Air Rifle programs have a very safe track record; many clubs advertise that it’s the safest sport a child could sign up for. These clubs also serve a bigger purpose than training future Olympians. The programs teach self discipline, emotional control, concentration, goal setting, teamwork and fair play to name a few life skills. It’s also one of only a few sports that the girls compete against the boys and often win. Strength, size and coordination are often not a measure of success in this program. Desire and work ethic are much more important to success.

For more information, visit the club’s website at www.eteamz.com/fcss.

Emory Teams Up With National Football League Player Care Program

The Emory University Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital is one of five hospitals chosen to participate in the NFL’s new spine treatment program for retired players. The program is designed to make specialists available to evaluate and treat spine-related conditions.

Each hospital in the program provides an orthopaedic spine surgeon who serves as program director and coordinates the services of a team of health care professionals in the evaluation and treatment of the former players. The Emory team includes John Heller, MD, orthopaedic surgeon, as program director; Gerald Rodts, MD, neurosurgeon and Michael Schaufele, MD, physiatrist.

“We are pleased to be selected by the NFL as the southeast regional comprehensive spine care program,” says Scott Boden, MD, professor of orthopaedic surgery at Emory University School of Medicine and director of the Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center. “Our center has 16 physicians dedicated to every aspect of spine care.”

The program, part of the NFL Player Care Plan, is available to retired players vested under the Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle pension plan.

Other hospitals selected include Mt. Sinai (New York), UCLA Health Systems (Los Angeles), University of California at San Francisco and Washington University (St. Louis).

In 2008, Emory participated in another program sponsored by the NFL Player Care Plan – a heart screening for retired players.

Interested players should contact the NFL Player Care Plan to connect with the appropriate program director who may initiate a course of treatment.

Retired NFL players may also find additional information on medical and benefits programs at www.nflplayercare.com.

Sports Celebrities Entertain Troops in Afghanistan

Photo: Former Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula, center, poses for a photo with a group of servicemembers at the Pat Tillman USO on Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, July 15, 2009. U.S. Army photo by Capt. Michael Greenberger

Celebrities stopped by [BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan] Wednesday to entertain troops as part of the star-studded USO's Summer Troop Visit.

Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the celebrities are travelling throughout the U.S. Central Command area of operations to thank troops for their service and sacrifice.

The celebrities include actors Bradley Cooper and D.B. Sweeney, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Warrick Dunn, National Football League Hall of Famer Don Shula, and sports commentator and model Leeann Tweeden.

The group's first stop was aboard the USS Ronald Reagan, an aircraft carrier currently under way in the Gulf of Oman. From the floating airport to the sands of Iraq to the hills of Afghanistan, the stars accompanying Mullen said they were excited about entertaining the troops deployed overseas.

"We feel like we want to give something back," said Shula, a well-known former Miami Dolphins coach. "We appreciate so much what our troops do, and we wanted to do something in return."

Travelling to different locations presents logistical challenges. Travel in Afghanistan is dangerous, and some of the outposts are so remote, the only way to reach them is by helicopter.

"The hardest part is getting the talent out to where they have to go," said Army Capt. Dena De Lucia, deputy chief of quality-of-life programs for U.S. Forces Afghanistan.

"Getting to remote [forward operating bases] means getting helicopters, and we got lucky this time because the 82nd Airborne graciously gave us two to use," De Lucia said.

Planning these types of trips can be as harrowing as planning an air-assault mission.

"It takes weeks and months in advance to plan something like this," De Lucia said. "It's a very arduous process. You have to contact camps and make sure they can support the visit, and make sure you can get to where they need to go."

Travelling throughout Afghanistan was difficult for the USO tour, but well worth it to both the troops they visited and the stars themselves.

"All of the places we go are really important, but the smaller locations are very austere, where they don't have hot showers or necessarily a hot meal every day," said Rachel Tischler, USO entertainment operations vice president. "So it's very special to bring that touch of home to those people that don't necessarily have those creature comforts."

Many of the hundreds that lined up outside the Pat Tillman USO here yesterday were delighted that the stars could break away from busy schedules to visit them.

"It's great to have the support of celebrities over here," Army Sgt. Linnea Biniak said. "Them being here and showing support for the troops definitely raises morale."

Inside the USO building, which is named for Pat Tillman, the ex-NFL player and U.S. Army Ranger killed in Afghanistan in 2004, the visiting celebrities struggled to give adequate attention to the servicemembers who had come to see them.

Rather than stay indoors, the stars decided to "walk the line" outside, where they could meet with more people and make sure everyone who came to see them received an autograph or personal photo.

In addition to the "grip and grins" pictures, ssome soldiers were given the opportunity to talk personally with celebrities. Army Spc. Jonathan Grizzard asked Sweeney about several of his films, including "Fire in the Sky," a 1993 film in which Sweeney plays a man abducted by aliens.

"That was the sweetest experience I'd ever had," Grizzard said. "I waited almost an hour, but I would have waited two hours -- it was totally worth it!"

"I've got several movies that people really responded to, and it's very flattering for people to bring up a movie that's 10 years old and talk about specific scenes," Sweeney said. "I kind of get to relive the process of making it, and it underscores what I think my role as an entertainer is, to help people forget their jobs for a little while and get through the day a little easier."

Elsewhere in the line, football fans shook hands and "mugged" with Dunn. Iraqi war veterans swapped stories with Tweeden from her last trip overseas.

Cooper was a big draw following his most recent hit film, "The Hangover."

Meanwhile, inside the building, Shula shared his most memorable moments with diehard sports fans eager for a glimpse of his Super Bowl ring and to get his autograph on their footballs.

Staying until well after 10 p.m., the stars made sure everyone had gotten what they'd come for before finally packing it in to prepare for another day of travelling to more Afghan locations the following day.

"It's amazing for them to come out here and represent the United States," said Air Force Master Sgt. Raymond Stone. "Not many people come out here, and I think it's great that they do it. They've got other things that they have to do, yet they've taken the time to come out here and show their support to us."

(Author Army Capt. Michael Greenberger is assigned to the 5th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment.)

Fayette County to Host the Georgia Games' 2009 Lacrosse Championships

The Georgia State Games will be bringing their annual State Games Championship to Peachtree City this summer for the Youth Lacrosse Tournament.

Each participant gets a free commemorative t-shirt and top athletes receive bronze, silver or gold medals! The tournament will be held at the Peachtree City Baseball and Soccer Complex, and all middle and high school teams are encouraged to come out and compete for the gold!
The Georgia Games is a non-profit organization created as a legacy of the 1996 Olympic Games that took place here in Atlanta. The goal was to keep the Olympic Dream alive in the hearts and minds of Georgians, something the Georgia Games is proud to say they have been able to do for 19 years!

The Georgia will also be bringing back the Scholastic Olympiad Program again for the 4th year. The program is a statewide competition between schools in all divisions. Our middle and high school athletes can earn points based on four criteria for their school. Points are then totaled for each individual in each sport and given to their respective school. The top three schools in each division then receive a grant!

Electronic Timing Added for all Participants in the AJC Peachtree Road Race

The Atlanta Track Club, organizer of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road
Race, is adding electronic timing for all participants for the 40th edition of the event. Previously, only runners in Time Group One and the seeded waves - approximately 7,500 runners - received timing devices with their race packets. This year, all 55,000 participants will be officially timed.

“We are always looking at ways to improve the event experience for participants in the AJC Peachtree Road Race,” stated Tracey Russell, Executive Director of the Atlanta Track Club. “Providing official timing for all participants will give runners the opportunity to see how they perform in one of the largest road races in the world.”

The light-weight, one-time-use D-Tag attaches to participants’ shoes and is activated when they cross the start line. The ChronoTrack D-Tag system was recently used at the Atlanta Track Club’s other signature event, The Weather Channel Atlanta Marathon and Half Marathon, this
past Thanksgiving and was well-received by event participants and race volunteers.

“With an event the size of the Peachtree, using traditional forms of electronic timing wouldn’t work because chip retrieval after the runners cross over the finish line often causes bottlenecks with that high of volume over a short period of time,” commented Jon Hughes, President of Event Marketing and Management International (EMMI), the official timing company of the AJC Peachtree Road Race. “The ChronoTrack D-Tag system eliminates the need to
retrieve the timing devices when runners cross the finish, and we are excited to incorporate this new timing technology into the largest race in the U.S.”

The 40th running of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road race will take place on Saturday, July 4, 2009. The race begins on Peachtree Road by Lenox Square and finishes on 10th Street near Piedmont Park.
